The 2011 Residential Weekend was held

in Parkes, Central West NSW

9-11 September 2011

Those who attended our Residential Weekend will agree it was an outstanding success. Our sincere thanks go to the organisers, Tony and Judy, their family and friends and the volunteers who made it such a success. There was something special about having it in a country centre where the community spirit was evident and the community support tangible. Our thanks to the many people who converged on Parkes from all over the state: we trust the travelling was worth it. Finally, a special thank-you to the presenters at the weekend - grief has many facets and our presenters help us to understand the journey we are on.

We were able to assist some families with the financial costs of attending the weekend due to financial hardship. Please keep this in mind, if you need help with travel costs or with the cost of the weekend in 2012. Please feel free to talk to your Chapter Leader or phone the Bereaved Parent Centre on (02) 9280 2355.

The 2012 Residential which will be held at the Mary McKillop Centre in North Sydney 15-16 September is now in the planning stage. More information will be posted about this event early next year.

Photos from the Residential Weekend

These are just a few of the photos taken at the weekend. There are many more but we believe it is important to protect people's privacy on this public medium. Please phone the Bereaved Parent Centre on (02) 9280 2355 or email if you would like more photos.

"It's in the Stars" - these leadlight stars were made by Tony and his students and decorated the meeting room. They symbolise both our children, whose light shines on in us long after their own light has failed, and the location (close to the Parkes Radio Telescope).  At the end of the weekend, these stars were given to the attendees. One star has been hung in the office at the Bereaved Parent Centre.

Below are the organisers, Tony and Judy with the presenters, Mal and Di McKissock, Robyn Nugent, Carly Fisher and Cathy Smith.

Invitation

We would like to extend a personal Invitation to you to join us at a very special weekend in Parkes for all bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents.  Registration forms for the weekend, to take place 10-11 September, will be available soon.

If you would like to come as a day participant for either Saturday, Sunday, or both days, you are most welcome.

The members of the Parkes Chapter are very excited that they can offer this weekend in the country and feel that it will be a time of companionship and comfort and an opportunity to share our grief with each other. We need not walk alone, we are The Compassionate Friends.

It will be an opportunity to meet other people who have lost a child and to share our feelings, stories, emotions and experiences. We all heal a little bit within the safe company of other bereaved parents.

We would like to encourage as many people as possible to attend, as past residential weekends have been very beneficial for people at all stages of their grief in a safe and caring environment. We will be including small, personal group work, as well as professional presentations. One of the most beneficial components of the weekend is the ‘casual chats’ we share with each other.

We are really keen to ensure that nobody misses the weekend because of financial difficulties and we are happy to offer a limited number of ‘homestays’ at  greatly reduced prices. These are with our family members or close friends who have ‘lived through’ our grief journey with us. They are happy to open their homes as a safe place for anyone needing assistance. Please contact Tony if you would like more information.

The Committee of TCF NSW would like to thank Tony Fisher for organising the Residential Weekend 2011

Our Facilitators

The Residential Weekend will include small group sessions and keynote addresses by  our facilitators.

We have an inspirational line up of qualified facilitators, who are well known within the field of grief and bereavement. Mal and Di McKissock and Robyn Nugent will present personal and professional information relating to our journey of grief. They will be supported Carly Fisher, who will explore the areas of sibling grief from her role as a psychologist and as a bereaved sibling, and Cathy Smith, naturopath/homeopath,  who will present her ‘Pathways to Peace’ session and will explore ways to manage our grief and pain.
